WHAT IS HYPNOTHERAPY AND IS IT EFFECTIVE VIA ZOOM?

Hypnosis is an inner state of focused absorption whereby the critical faculty of the conscious mind is bypassed allowing the unconscious to come to the fore so that selective thinking, suggestion, change and integration can take place. It is a safe and natural process in which the client retains control. Contrary to popular myth, hypnosis does not require deep-trance or in-person contact to be effective, it can be induced through conversation alone and therefore well suited to the online environment. Once connected to the unconscious, our environment is peripheral, therefore whether online or in person, results are the equal.

WHAT IS THE UNCONSCIOUS MIND?

The conscious mind is only our current awareness, that which we witness and have direct control over.  Logical, analytical, rational and deliberate, it expresses itself verbally through the language of words.  This mind enables us to interpret and navigate our external world by constructing internal schema or ‘maps’ that inform our perception of ‘how things are’ or ‘the way things should be’.  However, Sometimes these maps can send us off course. They can simply be inaccurate or distorted as the consequence of inherited or acquired patterns and programming.

 

Our unconscious mind is unbridled and holds everything the conscious mind can’t. This inner world encompasses all that has been witnessed, imprinted, and exiled. All parts of us. It harbours our creativity, spontaneity, memories and dreams. It is the origin of our thoughts, feelings, beliefs, behaviours and communicates through the language of metaphor, archetypes, symbolism, imagination, intuition and feeling.

Suffering arises when there is disharmony between the conscious and unconscious mind. Once connected to the unconscious we can excavate, discover, integrate and renew from a place of stillness and surrender. It is where we can identify and diffuse the root of our pain and create new, automatic ways of thinking, feeling and behaving.

WHAT IS NEURO-LINGUISTIC PROGRAMMING “NLP˝?

NLP is a powerful tool that focuses on the connection between the neurological processes, language, and behavior of an individual in order help them achieve their goals and overcome their limitations.

By understanding how the language we use to describe our experience affects our perceptions and beliefs - our ‘inner map’ - we can identify where it is impoverished or sending us off course and instigate change through language, thinking and physiology.

HOW CAN YOGA HELP IN A THERAPEUTIC CONTEXT?

In therapeutic practice I draw upon yoga techniques such as physical postures and breath work to regulate the nervous system and enhance hypnotisability.

WHAT ARE ENERGY HEALING PRACTICES?

‘Energy healing’ is a term that denotes holistic healing techniques based on the premise that vital energy moves through the human body, and that blockage or imbalance can be a precursor to ill health. For example, Acupuncture is a Traditional Chinese medical technique.

If appropriate (and with permission) I may integrate Reiki or TFT (Thought Field Therapy) during appointments to enhance hypnotisability and regulate the nervous system.

Reiki is an ancient Japanese technique to balance and unblock energy by gently applying the hands to different parts of the body.

TFT works in a similar way to Acupuncture, but rather than applying needles to particular energy points in the body, they are tapped upon with the fingers.
